Why pick the Google Home Max: A large Google smart speaker with two woofers, automatic room tuning and stereo pairing, praised by owners for its bass. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Sonos Roam 2 lacks. Watch for: Discontinued by Google since 2020, so it can no longer be bought new; used and refurbished stock is what remains, and RTINGS calls its soundstage mediocre despite the driver count.
The Sonos Roam 2 is the battery-powered, tougher pick. A small Wi-Fi and Bluetooth speaker with water resistance, Alexa built in and Sonos multiroom support. Its battery is rated for 10 hours, while the Google Home Max needs an outlet. It is rated IPX5, while the Google Home Max has no water resistance. The tradeoff: Exact same sound quality as the original Sonos Roam.
One note: the Google Home Max is no longer in production and isn’t widely stocked new anymore.
Buy the Google Home Max at $399 if you want a powered desktop speaker. Buy the Sonos Roam 2 at $178 if you want a medium speaker instead.
