Short answer: it’s close, and our own notes on the KH80 say so directly. The 8020D ranks #13 of 108 powered bookshelf speakers at $1,390; the KH80 DSP ranks #4 at $1,198, $192 less, with pros that describe it as near identical to the 8020D, just slightly warmer where the 8020D is slightly cleaner.
The 8020D’s measurements are unusually well documented. Klippel-based spinorama data shows a flat, well-behaved on-axis response with tight horizontal directivity out to roughly ±30 degrees, though the small 4.1-inch woofer and tweeter pair beams above 500Hz to 1kHz.
The KH80’s real limitation is control, not sound. Its companion app for EQ and setup is iPad-only, with no Android or Bluetooth option despite being control-only.
Buy the KH80 DSP. At roughly half the price for a near-identical sound by our own notes, the value case is hard to beat.
