The size difference drives the sound difference. The 8020D’s 4.1” woofer and tweeter pair give a flat, well-behaved on-axis response from roughly 60Hz to 10kHz, but its cons note that sound power starts rolling off around 500Hz to 1kHz as the small woofer begins to beam, which narrows its off-axis coverage. The 8030C steps up to a 5.1” woofer, and ASR’s Klippel measurements show a tighter 1.9dB response span from 300Hz to 5kHz with smooth, broad horizontal radiation.
Bass extension favors the 8030C by a small margin. Measured -3dB points land at 56Hz for the 8020D and 59Hz for the 8030C, essentially a wash, but at -10dB the 8030C reaches 47Hz against the 8020D’s 50Hz. The 8030C also has more headroom, with a 110dB max SPL at 1m versus the 8020D’s 103dB. Neither speaker is trouble-free: the 8030C carries a measurable dip around 2 to 3kHz on- and off-axis, and its cons note that demanding bass material can cause audible distress beyond moderate levels, so a subwoofer is worth pairing with either model for full-range work.
Everything else matches: both run on XLR input only, with no Bluetooth or companion app, 100W total output split 50W to the woofer and 50W to the tweeter, and a 0.75” metal dome tweeter. The 8030C adds a treble tilt and room-response EQ switch beyond the 8020D’s bass tilt and desk-proximity filters.
Buy the Genelec 8020D if your desk is tight or the price gap matters more than a slightly smoother midrange and higher headroom.
Buy the Genelec 8030C if you want the more accurate measured response and don’t mind the larger cabinet or the higher price.
