Short answer: the PreSonus Eris Studio 5, if you are buying new. The PreSonus Eris E5 measures as well as the Edifier MR5 (#77 vs #78 of 108 powered bookshelf speakers) but is discontinued; its replacement, the PreSonus Eris Studio 5, is rated 3.6/5 at $299.98 and is still sold new.
The MR5 is the better-equipped three-way monitor. A 5-inch woofer, a 3.75-inch midrange and a silk tweeter reach 51Hz before falling 3dB in Erin’s measurements, and it adds LDAC Bluetooth, an app EQ, balanced XLR and TRS inputs and a front headphone jack. Erin found uneven upper mids and treble, and its off-axis sound narrows above 2 to 3kHz.
The Eris E5 is a simple two-way studio monitor. Balanced XLR and TRS plus RCA inputs and placement switches make it easy to connect, and listeners describe a fuller low end than many small monitors. That fuller bass is not strictly neutral, and it has no Bluetooth. It is sold individually, so budget for two.
Buy the PreSonus Eris Studio 5, the replacement for the discontinued PreSonus Eris E5; it is rated higher for sound quality than the Edifier MR5.
