Short answer: the Edifier MR4. It ranks #48 of 67 powered bookshelf speakers by sound quality, rated 3.5/5, at $139.99; the Edifier MR5 ranks #52, rated 3.3/5, and costs $329, so there is little reason to consider the other one.
The MR5 fixes the MR4’s biggest weakness, which is bass. The MR4’s 4-inch woofer is 3dB down at 79Hz and 10dB down at 59Hz, while the three-way MR5 reaches about 51Hz at -3dB in Erin’s measurements, with a 5-inch woofer and a dedicated 3.75-inch midrange driven by 110W in total. The MR5 also plays louder before distorting; the MR4 shows rapidly rising distortion once pushed past moderate desk levels.
Neither is especially neutral. The MR4 earns preference scores of 3.25 on its own and 6.00 with an ideal subwoofer, with little overall tilt but lower treble unevenness. The MR5 has its own upper midrange and treble irregularities, and its off-axis response narrows quickly above about 2 to 3kHz, so keep it aimed at your ears.
The MR5 is the more complete package. Both have balanced TRS, RCA and aux inputs and a front headphone output. The MR5 adds balanced XLR, LDAC Bluetooth, app EQ and room compensation controls; the MR4 has no Bluetooth and only Monitor and Music sound modes, but its smaller cabinet fits a narrower desk.
Buy the Edifier MR4. It is rated higher for sound quality than the Edifier MR5 and costs less, so there is no real case for the other one.

Pros: Erin’s data supports a useful budget desktop monitor: a 3.0dB midrange span, little overall on-axis tilt, and preference scores of 3.25 standalone and 6.00 with an ideal subwoofer. Balanced TRS inputs and tone controls are practical at its price, and its response is more balanced than the measured R1280T. Measured bass extension of 79Hz (-3dB), with a measured sensitivity of 78dB.
Cons: Bass reaches -3dB around 79Hz, so deep extension should not be inferred from the overall flat trend. Listening-window response still has local irregularities, including lower-treble unevenness. The existing review reports rapidly increasing distortion and audible distress when pushed well above moderate desktop levels. No Bluetooth, and adding a subwoofer does not cure every output or tonal limitation.

Pros: Erin’s Audio Corner measured useful bass for a compact 5-inch monitor, with F3 around 51Hz. The three-way active design adds a dedicated 3.75-inch midrange, and the 110W RMS system, app EQ, room-compensation controls, LDAC, balanced XLR/TRS inputs, and front headphone output make it unusually well equipped at $329 per pair. Measured bass extension of 51Hz (-3dB), with a measured sensitivity of 85dB.
Cons: Erin’s CTA-2034 data shows upper-midrange and treble irregularities, while off-axis response narrows more quickly than ideal above about 2–3kHz. Bass output is level-limited below about 70Hz and distortion/compression rise at higher levels, so it suits moderate nearfield use better than loud mid-field playback.
