Short answer: the EcoXGear Defender, though neither ranks well in its class. It ranks #84 of 112 boombox speakers by sound quality, rated 2.5/5, at $299.99. The ION Pathfinder 280 ranks #100, rated 2.2/5, at $199.99, $100 cheaper, a saving that is not big enough to make up the sound-quality gap. Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 112 boombox speakers, so if sound quality matters, consider the Tribit Stormbox Blast instead, ranked #2 at $179.99.
The EcoXGear Defender is the lighter, tougher pick. A rugged, floating waterproof speaker that gets very loud for its size, with a flashlight, bottle opener and power bank. At 10 lbs (4.54 kg) it weighs much less than the ION Pathfinder 280 at 23.8 lbs (10.8 kg). It is rated IP67 against IPX5 for the ION Pathfinder 280. Watch for: Its single front-facing driver layout has narrow dispersion: clarity and detail drop noticeably when you move off-axis, and the soundstage is limited.
The ION Pathfinder 280 is the longer-running pick. A wheeled all day event speaker with a very long battery, lights, FM radio and a full graphic EQ that gets loud without strain. It is rated for 100 hours of battery against 25 for the EcoXGear Defender. The catch: Out of the box, the midrange and treble are uneven enough to sound alternately honky and dull, and the bass does not extend as deeply as better party speakers.
Buy the EcoXGear Defender. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $100 saving on the ION Pathfinder 280 is not enough to make up the difference.
