Short answer: the Genelec 8361A, unless you specifically want the Dutch & Dutch’s cardioid bass and network streaming. The 8361A ranks #10 of 119 large powered bookshelf speakers against the 8C’s #6, and it costs $1,300 less, so on paper this isn’t close.
The 8361A’s coaxial driver and headroom are the draw. Its 5-inch coaxial midrange with an inset 1-inch tweeter gives consistent imaging off-axis, and ASR’s measurements show a tight 1.8dB response span from 300Hz to 5kHz with low distortion and restrained compression, letting it play cleanly at greater distances than smaller nearfield monitors. The tradeoff is that its extra size mostly buys output headroom rather than uniformly better tonality than Genelec’s smaller Ones models, and some lower-midrange unevenness remains.
The 8C’s real advantage is bass you don’t need a subwoofer for. It reaches -3dB around 23Hz measured by Erin’s Audio Corner, dramatically deeper than the 8361A’s 34Hz, thanks to its dual rear-firing woofers and cardioid, boundary-aware bass processing. It also has native network streaming and Ethernet, which the 8361A lacks entirely. The cardioid operation reduces some room reflections but does not make placement irrelevant, and rear-woofer positioning still matters.
Buy the Genelec 8361A for the better measured accuracy at a lower price, if you don’t need built-in network streaming or extreme bass extension.
Buy the Dutch & Dutch 8C if full-range bass without a subwoofer and native streaming matter enough to justify paying more for a lower-ranked pair.
