Bumpboxx Flare 8 vs Turtlebox

Last updated: October 5, 2026

Short answer: both are discontinued, so this only matters if you are buying used, though neither ranks well in its class. Used, the Bumpboxx Flare 8 is the better pick: it ranks #72 of 91 boombox speakers by sound quality (rated 2.6/5), against #87 (rated 2.1/5) for the Turtlebox. Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 91 boombox speakers, and the Tribit Stormbox Blast, ranked #2 at $179.99, is a better place to start if sound quality matters.

Bumpboxx Flare 8 vs Turtlebox

The Bumpboxx Flare 8 is the better-sounding choice. A retro-styled, 19 lbs (8.6 kg) party speaker with useful real-world features: IPX6 splash resistance, FM radio, USB and microSD playback, aux input, TWS pairing and a claimed 118dB maximum output. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Turtlebox lacks. Watch for: Bass is thuddy rather than deep or controlled, and there is no app to improve the tuning.

The Turtlebox is the longer-running, lighter choice. Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. It is rated for 25 hours of battery against 12 for the Bumpboxx Flare 8. At 10 lbs (4.54 kg) it weighs much less than the Bumpboxx Flare 8 at 19 lbs (8.62 kg). The catch: Sounds basically identical to the later Gen 2 and Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality.

Buy the Bumpboxx Flare 8 only if you find one used in good condition; both are discontinued, and it is the better rated of the two. For a new speaker, start with the Tribit Stormbox Blast instead.

Bumpboxx Flare 8 ranking card

Newer model: the Bumpboxx Flare8 Pro, ranked higher, estimated 2.8/5.

Pros: A retro-styled, 8.6kg party speaker with useful real-world features: IPX6 splash resistance, FM radio, USB and microSD playback, aux input, TWS pairing and a claimed 118dB maximum output. It can play much louder than compact Bluetooth speakers and is easy to aim at a small outdoor gathering.

Cons: Bass is thuddy rather than deep or controlled, and there is no app to improve the tuning. Owner reports also raise reliability concerns, including noisy or intermittent volume controls and sound cutting out at high volume. It is a fun-looking niche product, not a sound-quality or durability leader. Discontinued.

Turtlebox ranking card

Newer model: the Turtlebox Gen 3, ranked higher, rated 2.1/5.

Pros: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. 25 hour battery life (6 hours at full volume). Pairs with a second unit for stereo. Measured bass extension of ~65Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Sounds basically identical to the later Gen 2 and Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality. The nearly identical Gen 3 measured a V shaped tuning, with boosted lows and highs and dipped mids, yet bass only down 10dB at about 65Hz, and only about 12W RMS from its amp; Turtlebox rated this one at just 50W. It rattles at high volume. Nowhere near its claimed 120dB at a standard one meter distance. It charges from an external AC power brick. Inside is essentially a car audio 6x9 two way speaker in a plastic box. Discontinued.
