These are not really the same size class, and that is the honest framing here. The Brane X ranks #4 of 117 large speakers by sound quality at $549; the Sonos Roam ranks #94 of 178 medium speakers by sound quality at $169.99.
The Brane X is the louder, deeper-bass pick. A portable speaker with extraordinarily deep bass for its size, plus Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Alexa and a low latency aux input. Its bass reaches about 31Hz before falling 10dB, against 63Hz for the Sonos Roam. Alan Ross Reviews measured it at 106dB at full volume, against 95dB for the Sonos Roam. It is rated IP57 against IPX5 for the Sonos Roam. The catch: The front-facing design has only moderate dispersion, so sound changes noticeably off to the sides or behind it.
The Sonos Roam is the lighter choice. A small, waterproof Wi-Fi and Bluetooth speaker with wireless charging, voice control and Sonos multiroom support. At 0.9 lbs (429 g) it weighs much less than the Brane X at 7.7 lbs (3.5 kg). Watch for: Bass extension isn’t very good.
One note: the Sonos Roam is discontinued and no longer widely available new. The Sonos Roam’s replacement, the Sonos Roam 2, is still sold new.
Buy the Brane X ($549) for a large speaker; the Sonos Roam ($169.99) suits a medium speaker instead.
