Different classes, so treat this as a step-up-or-not question rather than a head-to-head. The Brane X ranks #4 of 117 large speakers by sound quality at $549; the Sonos Era 300 ranks #6 of 10 powered desktop speakers by sound quality at $499.
The Brane X is the portable with astonishing bass. A dedicated subwoofer plus two midranges and two tweeters reach 31Hz before falling 10dB from a 7.7 lbs (3.5 kg) box, Alan Ross measured 106dB, and it has Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Alexa, aptX HD and an IP57 rating. It is front-facing with moderate dispersion, its upper bass is boosted around 120Hz, and its battery is rated for 12 hours.
The Era 300 is a stay-at-home spatial audio speaker. Side and upward-firing tweeters add Dolby Atmos height, Trueplay room correction tunes it to the room, and it pairs with Sonos soundbars for home theater. It leans bass-heavy until Trueplay corrects it, and it has no battery.
Buy the Brane X ($549) for a large speaker; the Sonos Era 300 ($499) suits a powered desktop speaker instead.
Water resistance is not close: the Brane X is rated at IP57 (brief submersion), well ahead of the Sonos Era 300 at no water resistance.
