Different classes, so treat this as a step-up-or-not question rather than a head-to-head. The Brane X ranks #4 of 117 large speakers by sound quality at $549; the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen ranks #14 of 15 powered desktop speakers by sound quality at $119.
The Brane X is the battery-powered, tougher option. A portable speaker with extraordinarily deep bass for its size, plus Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Alexa and a low latency aux input. Its battery is rated for 12 hours, while the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen needs an outlet. It is rated IP57, while the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen has no water resistance. It supports aptX HD Bluetooth, which the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen lacks. The tradeoff: The front-facing design has only moderate dispersion, so sound changes noticeably off to the sides or behind it.
Why pick the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen: A tiny Google Assistant speaker that responds quickly, raises its volume over background noise and has a mic mute switch. The tradeoff: Digital Trends’ main complaint was that maximum volume could be louder, and RTINGS’ independent review agrees, naming it their one real weakness.
One note: the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen is discontinued and no longer widely available new. The Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen’s replacement, the Google Home Speaker, is still sold new.
Buy the Brane X ($549) for a large speaker; the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen ($119) suits a powered desktop speaker instead.
