Short answer: the Skullcandy Terrain XT, if you are buying new. The Bose Soundlink Mini 2 ranks higher than it (#71 vs #156 of 164 medium speakers, 3.4/5 vs 2.1/5) but is discontinued, so only consider it used; the Skullcandy Terrain XT is still sold new at $38.77.
The Bose Soundlink Mini 2 is the better-sounding pick. Compact aluminum build feels sturdy and dense. ~10 hour battery life; can pair to two devices at once and remembers up to 8. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Skullcandy Terrain XT lacks. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the Skullcandy Terrain XT. The tradeoff: Boosted upper bass like most Bose speakers.
The Skullcandy Terrain XT is the longer-running, tougher option. IPX7 rated with a nylon wrist wrap for carrying. It is rated for 14 hours of battery against 10 for the Bose Soundlink Mini 2. It is rated IPX7, while the Bose Soundlink Mini 2 has no water resistance. The catch: Shares the Terrain line’s tuning: no bass, very rolled off treble, and distortion in the treble.
Buy the Skullcandy Terrain XT if you want one new; the Bose Soundlink Mini 2 is discontinued, so only look for it used.
