What the Audioengine A5+ Classic offers: CEA2034 spinorama shows a reasonably flat response outside of the upper bass. Internal Class AB amplification (50W RMS, 75W peak) with a linear power supply drives a 5” Kevlar woofer and 0.75” tweeter. Watch for: A valley in the upper bass (200-400Hz) recesses that range, and a distortion peak shows up around 800-900Hz even at 86dB SPL. Off-axis response doesn’t track the on-axis curve well through the crossover, suggesting the waveguide isn’t fully optimized. Resonances appear at 900Hz and 4.4kHz.
What the Donner Dyna 3 offers: Very inexpensive self-powered desktop pair with Bluetooth, balanced TRS, RCA and 3.5mm connectivity plus included isolation pads. The tiny 3-inch woofer/1-inch tweeter format occupies little desk space and produces usable output for close-range background listening. Watch for: Erin’s Klippel data contradicts the advertised studio-monitor accuracy: response is severely non-neutral, directivity is poorly integrated and the tonal errors are too large for a reference role. The small woofer has limited bass extension and high-level headroom, while distortion and compression rise quickly. It is an active system, so passive sensitivity and impedance do not apply; Erin did not publish comparable passive measurements. Better-measuring budget monitors are worth the additional cost.
Buy the Audioengine A5+ Classic if sound quality is the priority over the price, or the Donner Dyna 3 if the price is the priority over sound quality.
Skip the Donner Dyna 3 if sound quality matters to you. It ranks near the bottom of the 65 powered bookshelf speakers.

Pros: ASR’s A5+ Powered measurements give 3.68 standalone and 6.15 with an ideal subwoofer, with a 2.7dB midrange span. The analog powered pair is straightforward to use without an external amplifier. The measured result supports a more capable tonal balance than its former low position suggested. Measured bass extension of 68Hz (-3dB).
Cons: The measured -3dB point is around 69Hz, and the upper-bass recession can reduce body in voices and instruments. The existing review reports crossover-region directivity errors and a distortion feature around 800-900Hz. The score does not make it a reference monitor, and adding a subwoofer cannot correct those midrange and off-axis issues.

Pros: A low-cost powered desktop pair with several input options and a small footprint. It can provide basic close-range background playback without an external amplifier. Measured bass extension of 85.0Hz (-3dB).
Cons: Erin’s Klippel measurements give a negative standalone preference score of -0.56 and only 2.75 with an ideal subwoofer. The response spans 8.2dB from 300Hz to 5kHz, with large listening-window irregularities. Bass reaches -3dB around 85Hz, and the existing review reports distortion and compression limits. It is not a credible neutral studio monitor despite that style of marketing.
