Ascend Acoustics Sierra-LX vs JBL HDI-1600

Last updated: August 15, 2026

Short answer: the Ascend Acoustics Sierra-LX. It ranks #27 of 84 bookshelf speakers by sound quality at $1598; the JBL HDI-1600 ranks #34 and costs $1980, so there is not much of a tradeoff to weigh.

What the Ascend Acoustics Sierra-LX offers: Very neutral, flat frequency response - within about plus or minus 1.5dB ignoring one narrow dip. Watch for: Very low sensitivity at about 81dB, so it needs a genuinely powerful amplifier to reach normal listening levels.

What the JBL HDI-1600 offers: CEA2034 spinorama is very flat in the critical mid-to-upper frequencies, with a slight bass boost that should have a good subjective effect and very smooth early-window directivity. Watch for: A dip appears above 10kHz on-axis.

Buy the Ascend Acoustics Sierra-LX. It ranks higher for sound quality than the JBL HDI-1600 and costs less, so there is no real case for the other one.

Ascend Acoustics Sierra-LX ranking card

Pros: Very neutral, flat frequency response - within about plus or minus 1.5dB ignoring one narrow dip. Bass extension down to about 40Hz in-room despite the compact size. Wide, well-balanced soundstage (~60 degrees). Solid build quality with a laminated bamboo cabinet.

Cons: Very low sensitivity at about 81dB, so it needs a genuinely powerful amplifier to reach normal listening levels. Noticeable midrange distortion becomes audible above about 82-83dB SPL. A narrow dip around 3.5kHz on-axis in larger rooms without sidewall reflections - toeing the speakers out 10-20 degrees fills it in, but adds some brightness to the treble. Sensitive to listening height - sitting even slightly above or below tweeter level noticeably shifts the tonal balance.

JBL HDI-1600: $1980 Discontinued Crutchfield

JBL HDI-1600 ranking card

Pros: CEA2034 spinorama is very flat in the critical mid-to-upper frequencies, with a slight bass boost that should have a good subjective effect and very smooth early-window directivity. Predicted in-room response in a simulated average listening room closely tracks the reviewer’s own preferred target curve.

Cons: A dip appears above 10kHz on-axis. Cumulative spectral decay (waterfall) shows some messiness around the crossover along with a 700Hz resonance. Harmonic distortion rises to nearly 2% right at the 1.9kHz crossover point at 96dB SPL/1m. Discontinued.
