The Denon Home 150 ranks higher than the Amazon Echo Pop (#6 vs #15 of 15 powered desktop speakers) but is discontinued. Its replacement, the Denon Home 200, is rated 3.6/5 at $399; the Amazon Echo Pop is rated 2.4/5 at $45.98, $353.02 cheaper.
The case for the Amazon Echo Pop: A very cheap compact Alexa speaker with strong voice pickup, smart home support and eero Wi-Fi extender support. It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the Denon Home 150 lacks. The catch: PCWorld’s earlier review was blunt: despite a larger 1.95-inch driver on paper, it sounded flat and tinny with only a hint of bass next to the smaller-driver Echo Dot, and called the value proposition a hard no; RTINGS’ more recent test agrees on the underlying tradeoff, noting it can’t reproduce as much low bass as the Amazon Echo Dot Max and doesn’t get very loud.
The Denon Home 150 is the better-sounding pick. A compact smart speaker with built in Alexa, easy HEOS setup and stereo pairing with a second unit. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Amazon Echo Pop lacks. The tradeoff: Tom’s Guide’s own complaints are that it costs more than the Sonos One and has no automatic room tuning to correct for placement.
Buy the Amazon Echo Pop if price matters most. For better sound quality, the Denon Home 200, the replacement for the discontinued Denon Home 150, is rated higher but costs $399.
