These are not really the same size class, and that is the honest framing here. The Amazon Echo Pop ranks #14 of 14 powered desktop speakers by sound quality at $45.98; the Brane X ranks #4 of 105 large speakers by sound quality at $549.
What the Amazon Echo Pop does well: A compact 0.4 lbs (195 g) half-sphere Alexa smart speaker with strong voice pickup, a mic mute button and Matter and Sidewalk smart home support. The tradeoff: PCWorld’s earlier review was blunt: despite a larger 1.95-inch driver on paper, it sounded flat and tinny with only a hint of bass next to the smaller-driver Echo Dot, and called the value proposition a hard no; RTINGS’ more recent test agrees on the underlying tradeoff, noting it can’t reproduce as much low bass as the Amazon Echo Dot Max and doesn’t get very loud.
The Brane X is the battery-powered, tougher choice. The Brane X pairs a dedicated RAD subwoofer with two midrange drivers and two tweeters to achieve extraordinary low bass for a 7.7 lbs (3.5 kg) portable: its measured -10dB extension is 31Hz. Its battery is rated for 12 hours, while the Amazon Echo Pop needs an outlet. It is rated IP57, while the Amazon Echo Pop has no water resistance. It supports aptX HD Bluetooth, which the Amazon Echo Pop lacks. Watch for: The front-facing design has only moderate dispersion, so sound changes noticeably off to the sides or behind it.
Buy the Amazon Echo Pop at $45.98 for a powered desktop speaker, or the Brane X at $549 for a large speaker instead.
