USB-C Dongle DACs

Ranked #24 of 26 in USB-C Dongle DACs - AudioQuest DragonFly Red: $149.95 Amazon $149.95 eBay

AudioQuest DragonFly Red ranking card

Pros: It is a compact USB stick DAC with a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a high resolution digital volume control set from the phone or computer.

Cons: Audio Science Review measured a SINAD of 88 dB, a real audible weakness with sensitive in-ear monitors. AudioQuest does not publish a power figure into 32 ohms, and it plugs into USB-A, so phones need an adapter. The Samsung USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter measures cleaner and rates higher for a fraction of the cost.

Discontinued AudioQuest Models

Still ranked, and often still worth buying used, but no longer in production. Check availability before planning around one of these.

Over-Ear Headphones

Ranked #289 of 308 in Over-Ear Headphones - AudioQuest NightHawk Discontinued eBay

AudioQuest NightHawk ranking card

Pros: Lower mids sit within about 0.5 dB of target, keeping voices and guitars natural. It uses 1 x 50mm dynamic with an easy 25 ohm load.

Cons: Discontinued, so it is mainly found used. Presence sits about 5.2 dB low with a 9.8 dB dip near 3.1 kHz, so vocals and instruments lose some bite. Sub-bass is 2.7 dB short at 30 Hz, so deep bass lacks rumble. A Harman score of 33 places it in the lower part of the over-ear rankings.
