Audio-Technica Speaker Rankings and Reviews

Last updated: October 10, 2026

Coverage note. Speaker Ranking currently covers 13 Audio-Technica models across headphones. These are the products in our database, not a complete list of everything Audio-Technica makes.

What this page covers. The Audio-Technica models ranked here span headphones, including Audio-Technica ATH-ADX5000, Audio-Technica ATH-M70x and Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa. Use each model’s category position to compare it with alternatives of the same size and use case.

This page lists all 13 Audio-Technica speakers ranked on this site across headphones. Each model is shown in the category where it competes, with its current rank and the size of that ranking.

Use the category position rather than the brand name alone: speakers from the same manufacturer can perform very differently by size, price and product family.

Prices on this page were last checked October 10, 2026 at 5:37 PM UTC. Product prices and availability are accurate as of that date/time and are subject to change; the price and availability shown on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply to the purchase of this product.

Over-Ear Headphones

Ranked #14 of 134 in Over-Ear Headphones - Audio-Technica ATH-ADX5000: $2,199.00 Amazon eBay

Audio-Technica ATH-ADX5000 ranking card

Pros: A preference score of 89 with a perfectly neutral tilt reflects a balanced tuning, with bass and low mids within about 0.7 dB of target. Treble from 6 to 10 kHz lands right on target, giving cymbals and vocals a natural level. It weighs only 270 g for an open back flagship, and it rates higher than the Sennheiser HD 800 S and HIFIMAN HE6.

Cons: The 420 ohm impedance calls for a dedicated headphone amplifier, because a phone or dongle will struggle to drive it to a satisfying volume. Sub-bass is about 6 dB under target below 60 Hz, a 4.4 dB dip near 2.2 kHz thins some vocals, and the air region above 10 kHz runs about 3.6 dB hot with a 6 dB peak near 11.9 kHz. The open back leaks sound and offers no isolation.

Ranked #21 of 134 in Over-Ear Headphones - Audio-Technica ATH-M70x: $329.00 Amazon eBay

Audio-Technica ATH-M70x ranking card

Pros: A preference score of 87 and a fairly smooth 1.6 dB deviation make it one of the closer closed-back models to the Harman target. Bass from 60 to 200 Hz lands within 1 dB of target, and sub-bass is only about 2 dB light, so low end is tidy without being thin. At 35 ohms and 97 dB sensitivity it is easy to drive from a laptop or interface, and the closed design isolates and does not leak into a room.

Cons: Presence is lifted by about 3 dB with a peak of 4.6 dB near 4.5 kHz, which adds bite to vocals, snares and guitars and can become fatiguing at higher volumes. Treble above 6 kHz also runs slightly hot, so bright recordings sound sharper than neutral. At 280 g it is heavier than many open-back rivals in its class.

Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa ranking card

Older model: the Audio-Technica ATH-R70x (ranked lower, rated 4/5). See every Audio-Technica ATH-R70x generation.

Pros: A preference score of 86 comes from a well balanced midrange, with upper mids within 0.1 dB of target and low mids only 0.8 dB under. At 199 g it is a very light open-back design. The warm tilt and slightly relaxed top suit listeners who find bright headphones tiring.

Cons: Sub-bass below 60 Hz is about 6.5 dB under target, so bass is clean but lacks rumble. An 8.8 dB dip near 4.2 kHz and presence about 3.4 dB low pull some clarity out of vocals and instrument attack, making it sound recessed. The 470 ohm impedance means it needs a dedicated headphone amp, and the open back leaks sound.

Ranked #36 of 134 in Over-Ear Headphones - Audio-Technica ATH-R50x: $169.00 Amazon eBay

Audio-Technica ATH-R50x ranking card

Pros: A preference score of 83 and the smoothest deviation in this group at 1.67 dB make for a very even response, with bass from 60 to 200 Hz and low mids within 0.6 dB of target. At 50 ohms and 93.3 dB/mW sensitivity it can be driven by most portable sources, and at 207 g it is light. It costs less than the AKG K701 and AKG K702 while holding the same rating.

Cons: Sub-bass is about 6 dB low under 60 Hz, so deep rumble is lacking. Treble is slightly forward, with presence about 2 dB high, 6 to 10 kHz about 2.6 dB high and a 4.8 dB peak near 6.3 kHz, which can make vocals and cymbals bright. Its tilt of 0.64 leans bright, and the open back leaks sound.

Ranked #55 of 134 in Over-Ear Headphones - Audio-Technica ATH-M40x: $109.00 Amazon eBay

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x ranking card

Pros: The closed back keeps outside noise down and sound in, and at 240 g it is the lightest closed back in this group. Bass from 60 to 200 Hz sits about 3 dB above target while sub-bass is nearly on target, giving punchy, full low end with a preference score of 79. At 35 ohms and 98 dB sensitivity a phone drives it without an amp, and it ties the Philips SHP9500 on rating at a slightly higher street price.

Cons: Treble from 6 to 10 kHz is about 2 dB hot and the top octave 4.5 dB above target, with a 5.5 dB peak near 8.3 kHz, so cymbals and sibilants can sound sharp and splashy. A 3 dB dip near 5 kHz can blur vocal detail slightly. The bass emphasis is too much for listeners who want a neutral balance.

Ranked #57 of 134 in Over-Ear Headphones - Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: $158.00 Amazon eBay

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x ranking card

Pros: This closed back has a very smooth response, with a deviation of 2.0 dB and the largest peak only 1.2 dB near 4.3 kHz, so it avoids harshness. Sub-bass is on target and bass from 60 to 200 Hz is about 3 dB above, which gives clean, punchy bass, and the preference score is 78. At 38 ohms and 99 dB/mW it is easy to drive from a phone, it weighs 285 g and it isolates from noise.

Cons: Treble from 6 to 10 kHz is about 1.7 dB low and a 3.5 dB dip near 6.8 kHz softens cymbals and sibilance, while the top octave runs about 2 dB hot, a slightly uneven treble. The warm, bass lifted balance is not neutral enough for critical listening. It is a closed back, so bass has less airiness than the open backs in this class.

Audio-Technica ATH-M60x ranking card

Pros: Bass from 60 to 200 Hz and the upper mids sit within about 0.3 dB of the Harman target, so the core of the sound is well balanced. At 38 ohms, 102 dB/mW and 220 g it is easy to drive from a phone and light to wear. The closed back keeps outside noise down for monitoring and commuting.

Cons: Treble is rolled off, about 2.7 dB under target from 6 to 10 kHz and 3 dB under above that, with a deep 10.9 dB dip near 10.6 kHz that dulls cymbal shimmer and air. Sub-bass is about 3.8 dB light and the low mids about 2.3 dB light, which thins the lowest notes and vocal warmth. The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x holds a higher rating for far less money.

Audio-Technica ATH-M20x ranking card

Pros: The response is gentle in the midrange, with upper mids within about half a dB of target, so voices sit naturally. Closed backs, a 47 ohm impedance and 96 dB sensitivity let it run from a phone or laptop, and at 190 g it is a light wired headphone.

Cons: Sub-bass under 60 Hz is about 7 dB below target, so deep synth bass and kick drums lack rumble. A 12.8 dB dip near 5.6 kHz and presence about 8 dB low make vocals and snare detail recede, and treble stays dull overall, which suits warm tastes but loses sparkle.

Pros: The open-back 53mm driver gives a wide, airy sound, and the air region above 10 kHz is nearly on target. At 38 ohms and 100 dB/mW it runs directly from a phone, and it weighs only 265 g.

Cons: Sub-bass sits about 11 dB below target and bass from 60 to 200 Hz is roughly 3 dB low, so kick drums and bass lines sound thin. A 11.8 dB dip near 7.2 kHz, with presence about 6 dB low, dulls vocals and cymbals, and a 3.47 dB deviation makes it less even than most. The open back leaks sound and offers no isolation.

Ranked #108 of 134 in Over-Ear Headphones - Audio-Technica ATH-AWAS: $1,499.00 Amazon eBay

Audio-Technica ATH-AWAS ranking card

Pros: A wired closed-back headphone with a large 53mm driver, 40 ohms and 99 dB/mW sensitivity, which a phone can drive at moderate volumes though a headphone amplifier will suit it better. Its Harman preference score of 60 in crinacle’s measurement shows a response that is reasonably close to target. The rated range of 5 Hz to 42 kHz points to a wide, extended design.

Cons: The response is fairly uneven, with a standard deviation near 3.7 dB. At 395 g it is heavy for long sessions, and it has no wireless option or microphone. The price is extremely high for this score, and the Focal Elear has a higher rating for less money.

Pros: The open-back design gives a spacious, airy presentation, and the 48 ohm impedance with 100 dB sensitivity works directly from a phone or laptop. At 235 g it is light for a full-size headphone. The lower midrange is within half a dB of target, so the body of voices and guitars sounds natural.

Cons: Treble from 6 to 10 kHz is about 9 dB below target and a 16 dB dip near 7.2 kHz removes cymbal and sibilance detail, so the sound is dark and veiled. Sub-bass is about 9 dB low under 60 Hz, so deep bass lacks rumble. Open backs leak sound and give no isolation. The Anker Soundcore Space One has a higher rating at a lower price.

Audio-Technica ATH-CK2000Ti ranking card

Pros: The dual phase push-pull design uses two dynamic drivers (9.8mm and 8.8mm) per side, and the manufacturer quotes a very wide 5 Hz to 45 kHz range. At 10 ohms and 100 dB/mW it works from a phone or portable player without a dedicated amp. Crinacle’s measurement gives a preference score of 60, with a mild warm tilt of about 0.8 dB.

Cons: A preference score of 60 and a 2.97 dB deviation from the target mean the tonal balance is noticeably off for most listeners. It is rated below the FiiO FH5 and well below the HIFIMAN RE2000, which offer more accurate tuning at similar money. No inline microphone or other convenience features are listed.

Audio-Technica ATH-R70x ranking card

Newer model: the Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa, ranked higher, rated 4.2/5. See every Audio-Technica ATH-R70x generation.

Pros: A preference score of 82 with a deviation of 1.9 dB shows a smooth, well-controlled response in oratory1990’s measurement. Bass from 60 to 200 Hz and the midrange sit almost exactly on target, giving natural vocals and instruments with a slightly warm tilt. At 210 g with an open back, it is light and airy for long sessions at home.

Cons: Sub-bass below 60 Hz is about 6.5 dB under target, so kick drums and synth bass lack deep rumble. A dip of nearly 7 dB near 9.9 kHz and a treble that sits about 2.7 dB low soften cymbals and detail. The 470 ohm impedance calls for a dedicated headphone amp, and the open back leaks sound.
