JBL Flip 7 vs Sony SRS-XB20

Last updated: August 21, 2026

Short answer: the JBL Flip 7 ranks #14 of 136 medium speakers by sound quality at $129.95; the Sony SRS-XB20 ranks #94 at $129. Close enough in price that the sound-quality gap is the deciding factor.

The case for the JBL Flip 7: A very neutral speaker, very small, almost pocket size. Just slightly more treble than the Flip 6 which was already a great speaker. Watch for: A little bit of a bump at 4khz, not quite as neutral as the FLip 6. I believe this one is slightly worse than the Flip 6.

On the Sony SRS-XB20 side: IPX5 rated pill shape slides easily into a bag. 12 hour battery life. The catch: Sounds thin at higher volumes. Bass falls away quickly.

Buy the JBL Flip 7 if sound quality matters more than the price. Buy the Sony SRS-XB20 if the price matters more than sound quality.

If water resistance matters to you, the JBL Flip 7 at IP68 (extended submersion) holds up far better than the Sony SRS-XB20 at IPX5 (water jets).
