Last updated: August 20, 2026

Short answer: the Bose SoundLink Max. It ranks #17 of 77 large speakers by sound quality at $309.99; the JBL Xtreme 4 ranks #37 and costs $380, so there is not much of a tradeoff to weigh.

The case for the Bose SoundLink Max: IP67 rated, dustproof and waterproof to 1m. The catch: Big peak in the upper bass, dipped midrange and lots of peaks and dips above the midrange.

On the JBL Xtreme 4 side: Removable battery. Watch for: High priced. Some bass boost.

Buy the Bose SoundLink Max. It ranks higher for sound quality than the JBL Xtreme 4 and costs less, so there is no real case for the other one.

Pros: Removable battery. Slightly deeper bass than Xtreme 3. Use this EQ for the best sound quality.

Cons: High priced. Some bass boost. Dip in the upper bass to midrange makes it sound strange which cannot be EQd out. Some upper mids and treble boost at high levels.
