These are not really the same size class, and that is the honest framing here. The Turtlebox/Turtlebox G2 ranks #67 of 70 boombox speakers by sound quality at $400; the Turtlebox Ranger ranks #53 of 134 medium speakers by sound quality at $250.
What the Turtlebox/Turtlebox G2 gets right: A more traditional boombox format if that’s what you’re after. The catch: it ranks near the bottom of the boombox class here.
On the Turtlebox Ranger side: Much better frequency response than the rest of the Turtlebox lineup, plus magnets for mounting it to things and a genuinely tough build. The tradeoff: bass is kind of thuddy and not as deep as higher-ranked speakers, it’s overpriced, and heavy for its size.
Buy the Turtlebox/Turtlebox G2 at $400 if you want a boombox speaker. Buy the Turtlebox Ranger at $250 if you want a medium speaker instead.

The Two Speakers In Full
Turtlebox/Turtlebox G2: $400 Amazon
Pros: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. 25 hour battery life (6 hours at full volume; 3 hour charge time). USB-C output charges other devices. Pairs with a second Gen 2 for larger groups.
Cons: They pretty much lie about all their specs and sound horrible in all youtube sound samples. Only 50w (from their indigogo page), will never hit 120db at a reasonable measuring distance. Putting your db meter right against the speaker doesn’t count, 1 meter distance is the standard. Barely any bass. Rattles at high volume. Uses external AC power brick to charge. Looking at it, it appears to be a generic car 2-way 6x9 speaker in a plastic box.

Turtlebox Ranger: $250.00 Amazon
Pros: Much better frequency response than the other Turtlebox speakers. Has magnets for attaching it to things. Appears to be quite tough
Cons: Bass sounds kind of thuddy and isn’t as deep as higher ranked speakers. Overpriced. Heavy for the size, likely due to the toughness
