Oluv’s Speaker Picks
Oluv prefers a very neutral sound signature and has done the DSP design on the Earfun Uboom L and Earfun Uboom X which is why they are at the top of his list. His choices tend to align nearly perfectly with my own. See all his favorite speakers in one video on his wife Joy’s YouTube channel
Oluv’s favorite small pocket size speaker is the $60 Tribit Stormbox Micro 2
- Positives: Best in class sound. Much deeper bass than most other speakers in the size. Built in strap is super useful for attaching it to things. Very neutral. To have it aimed directly at you unclip the strap and the speaker will sit upright with a slight lean back.
- Negatives: Finicky phone charging, which doesn’t usually work.

Oluv’s favorite medium size battery powered speaker is the $50 Uboom L (after clipped coupon and coupon UBOOMLWC in the payment options) with Oluv’s EQ turned on in the Earfun app (Android or iOS. If the app doesn’t work, update the speaker to firmware 1.2.7.
- Positives: Tuned by Oluv and he knocked it out of the park. The audiophile choice. Extremely neutral, possibly the best of any modern Bluetooth speaker slightly behind the Vifa Helsinki. This is the only speaker that sounds correct at every volume level. Other speakers will need a different EQ at each volume level. For maximum volume without distortion use max volume - 1 step for most songs. Oluv left another higher volume for sounds that are quiet. Amazing sounding at low levels as it boosts bass and treble at low levels to account for the equal-loudness contour.
- Negatives: Latency is high (400ms) without turning on low latency mode (66ms) which doesn’t work when two speakers are TWS paired. Low latency mode can be turned on by pressing the Bluetooth button twice. If latency in TWS paired mode is a very important feature, like if you watch a lot of video, you may want to choose another speaker. The power button can sometimes get accidentally pressed when put in a bag. The aux input has quite a bit of latency and isn’t recommended for video use.
- Setup: Try setting up the Earfun App (Android or iOS) to see if that works. If not, you’ll need to flash firmware 1.2.7 to work with the app and set with Oluv’s EQ in the Earfun app which sounds the best. The instructions say that you need a USB3 cable, but most USB2 cables work just fine, try the one included with your phone. Check the current firmware version by turning it on, then pressing the power and Bluetooth buttons at the same time. To flash, turn the speaker off then hold down the Bluetooth button while plugging in the cable. To flash on a mac, see these instructions. In TWS mode, long press the outdoor button for 2 seconds to change TWS to Party mode and back.

Oluv’s favorite large size battery powered speaker is the $120 Soundcore Boom 2 running Oluv’s EQ
- Positives: Pretty deep bass for the size. Cool lights in the side passive radiators. For the best sound quality use Oluv’s EQ or Alan Ross’s EQ. With the stock tuning, this speaker would rank around #24, due to the boosted bass and rising treble.
- Negatives: Only a single midrange driver, so you only get stereo for the tweeters. Sound processing issues with inconsistent bass notes that disappear at low levels like the Soundcore Boom and Soundcore Boost, not great for listening at low levels. Quite bass heavy with BassUp turned on, I’d recommend turning it off. A little bit of a bright tuning in the treble, about +5db.

Oluv’s favorite boombox size battery powered speaker is the $110 Earfun Uboom X (after clipped coupon and code UBOOMXDR in the payment options).
- Positives: Tuned by Oluv and he knocked it out of the park again. Deeper bass than the Stormbox Blast. Extremely neutral, possibly the best of any modern Bluetooth speaker slightly behind the Vifa Helsinki. The Earfun app (Android or iOS) has sound profiles created by Oluv for Studio, Indoor, Indoor+, Outdoor, Outdoor+, BOOM xxX, and Ground 0 which are all fantastic. This is the only speaker that sounds correct at every single volume level due to Oluv’s individual EQ settings at each volume level. Other speakers will need a different EQ at each volume level. Amazing sounding at low levels as it boosts bass and treble at low levels to account for the equal-loudness contour. Just considering the midrange and treble, this speaker is better sounding than the Earfun Uboom L.
- Negatives: The out of the box 0.33 firmware and EQ sounds horrible, please update it using the Earfun app (Android or iOS) and select an Oluv EQ. Some people have mentioned sound interruption issues when using 2 in TWS, I don’t have this issue with my Pixel 7 Pro.

Alan Ross’s Speaker Picks
Alan Ross has mentioned he prefers a slightly warm sound signature, and the speakers he selects do have some bias towards that but are still fairly neutral. His choices are generally in the top 10 of each of my categories and are all great speakers too.
Alan Ross’s favorite small pocket size speaker is the $60 Tribit Stormbox Micro 2
- Positives: Best in class sound. Much deeper bass than most other speakers in the size. Built in strap is super useful for attaching it to things. Very neutral. To have it aimed directly at you unclip the strap and the speaker will sit upright with a slight lean back.

Alan Ross’s favorite medium size speaker is the $80 Soundcore Motion+
- Positives: The previous best sounding in class, still a great speaker with separate tweeters, more bass at full volume and better off-axis treble frequency response than the Uboom L. Just okay with the default EQ, I highly recommend using this EQ setting from r/kai7895 to get it more neutral. To achieve the absolute best sound you’ll need the Wavelet app (Android only) and set the provided Wavelet EQ in there too. Turn off the wavelet EQ for outdoor use. An alternative is Oluv’s EQ which only needs the Soundcore app EQ.
- Negatives: Not quite as neutral or detailed as the Uboom L. Without the above EQ, this speaker will rank around #25 in the rankings.
- Max Volume: 104db
- Bass Extension: 54hz (-10dB)

Alan Ross’s favorite large size speaker is the $200 Marshall Stockwell 2

Alan Ross’s favorite boombox size speaker is the $350 Harman Kardon Go+ Play 3:
- Positives: Warm sound with boosted bass. Deepest bass out of any speaker in this size. Sound is more natural than the Go+play2.
- Negatives: Just a little over half as loud as the higher rated boomboxes. Only 8 hours of battery at medium volume. No water rating.
- Setup: Use the hidden EQ modes to adjust the bass up when outside and down when inside. To adjust bass, quickly press the bluetooth and volume down buttons together, the number of light flashes tell you what mode you’re in. To adjust treble, quickly press the volume up and phone buttons at the same time, the number of yellow flashes on the light tell you what mode you are in.
