Earfun
Earfun has 2 specific speakers tuned by Austrian music producer Oluv which always come out on top for sound quality.
This boombox size battery powered speaker is known to have it all, fantastic sound quality, clarity, neutrality with very deep bass at a fantastic price Earfun Uboom X [Myearfun] [Amazon]: $128 with code UBOOMXDR
- Positives: Tuned by Oluv and he knocked it out of the park again. Deeper bass than the Stormbox Blast. Extremely neutral, possibly the best of any modern Bluetooth speaker slightly behind the Vifa Helsinki. This is the only speaker that sounds correct at every single volume level due to Oluv’s individual EQ settings at each volume level. Other speakers will need a different EQ at each volume level. Amazing sounding at low levels as it boosts bass and treble at low levels to account for the equal-loudness contour. Just considering the midrange and treble, this speaker is better sounding than the Earfun Uboom L.
- Negatives: The out of the box 0.33 firmware and EQ sounds horrible. Some people have mentioned sound interruption issues when using 2 in TWS, I don’t have this issue with my Pixel 7 Pro, try disabling AAC in that case
- Setup: Please update it using the Earfun app (Android or iOS) and select an Oluv EQ. The Earfun app has sound profiles created by Oluv for Studio, Indoor, Indoor+, Outdoor, Outdoor+, BOOM xxX, and Ground 0 which are all fantastic. Oluv has a newer firmware pack that brings it up a few more notches of neutral

This medium size battery powered speaker is known for its fantastic sound quality, clarity, neutrality at a fantastic price, the Earfun Uboom L [Amazon] [Myearfun]: $50 after coupon UBOOMLWC in the payment options
- Positives: Tuned by Oluv and he knocked it out of the park. The audiophile choice. Extremely neutral, possibly the best of any modern Bluetooth speaker slightly behind the Vifa Helsinki. This is the only speaker that sounds correct at every volume level. Other speakers will need a different EQ at each volume level. For maximum volume without distortion use max volume - 1 step for most songs. Oluv left another higher volume for songs that are quiet. Amazing sounding at low levels as it boosts bass and treble at low levels to account for the equal-loudness contour.
- Negatives: Latency is high (400ms) without turning on low latency mode (66ms) which doesn’t work when two speakers are TWS paired. Low latency mode can be turned on by pressing the Bluetooth button twice. If latency in TWS paired mode is a very important feature, like if you watch a lot of video, you may want to choose another speaker. The power button can sometimes get accidentally pressed when put in a bag. The aux input has quite a bit of latency and isn’t recommended for video use.
- Setup: Try setting up the Earfun App (Android or iOS) to see if that works. If not, you’ll need to flash firmware 1.2.7 to work with the app and set with Oluv’s EQ in the Earfun app which sounds the best. The instructions say that you need a USB3 cable, but most USB2 cables work just fine, try the one included with your phone. Check the current firmware version by turning it on, then pressing the power and Bluetooth buttons at the same time. To flash, turn the speaker off then hold down the Bluetooth button while plugging in the cable. To flash on a mac, see these instructions. In TWS mode, long press the outdoor button for 2 seconds to change TWS to Party mode and back.

Soundcore
Soundcore has had many speakers over the years. A few that were hits and a bunch that were just mediocre, here’s their best speakers.
This large size battery powered speaker is known for having great sound quality and deep bass at a very reasonable price, the Soundcore Boom 2 [Amazon] [Bhphotovideo]: $90
- Positives: Pretty deep bass for the size. Cool lights in the side passive radiators. For the best sound quality use Oluv’s EQ or Alan Ross’s EQ. With the stock tuning, this speaker would rank around #24, due to the boosted bass and rising treble.
- Negatives: Only a single midrange driver, so you only get stereo for the tweeters. Sound processing issues with inconsistent bass notes that disappear at low levels like the Soundcore Boom and Soundcore Boost, not great for listening at low levels. Quite bass heavy with BassUp turned on, I’d recommend turning it off. A little bit of a bright tuning in the treble, about +5db.

This medium size battery powered speaker is a stereo and omnidirectional speaker in one with great sound quality at a fantastic price, the Soundcore Motion 300 [Amazon]: $68
- Positives: Pretty deep bass for the small size. Pocket size in a big pocket. Can be used in stereo facing you, or omnidirectional lying down. Ability to have a custom EQ for each orientation, standing, lying flat, hanging. Try the Uboom L EQs from Oluv for a more neutral sound.
- Negatives: Without the above EQ or turning the top 2 treble EQ bars to max, this speaker is very rolled off in the treble and will rank around #50 in the rankings. Bassup mode is worse than Signature. Not quite as detailed or neutral as higher ranked speakers. Slight bass distortion when turned up.

This medium size speaker has a 0 latency aux input with fantastic sound quality and is the only speaker in its size class with seperate tweeters for fantastic off axis treble performance, the Soundcore Motion+ [Amazon]: $80 used
- Positives: The previous best sounding in class, still a great speaker with separate tweeters, more bass at full volume and better off-axis treble frequency response than the Uboom L. Just okay with the default EQ, I highly recommend using this EQ setting from r/kai7895 to get it more neutral. To achieve the absolute best sound you’ll need the Wavelet app (Android only) and set the provided Wavelet EQ in there too. Turn off the wavelet EQ for outdoor use. An alternative is Oluv’s EQ which only needs the Soundcore app EQ.
- Negatives: Not quite as neutral or detailed as the Uboom L. Without the above EQ, this speaker will rank around #25 in the rankings.

Tribit
Tribit just like Souncore has had a few top hits with a bunch of mediocre speakers over the years, here’s their best speakers.
This boombox size battery powered speaker has very deep bass, along with great sound quality, the Tribit Stormbox Blast [Amazon]: $170
- Positives: Amazing speaker given its size, competes well with some speakers in the Party size class, bass almost as deep as a Partybox 100. Quite neutral in the default and xbass modes, but try Oluv’s EQ or Alan Ross’s EQ for a slightly more neutral sound. Oluv has mentioned v3.5 now uses his EQ as the defaults and sounds extremely good. 2 different light modes or can be turned off.
- Negatives: Lacks a bit of detail compared to the top ranked speakers in other size categories, dip at 5.5khz. Without the above EQ this speaker would rank around #4 in the rankings. The curved underside of the handle makes it a little harder to grip and can be uncomfortable to carry long distances.

This large size battery powered speaker has very deeper bass and great sound quality, the Tribit Stormbox Lava [Amazon] [Aliexpress]: $100
- Positives: Fantastic bass extension. Sounds pretty neutral in the Jazz mode. Goes deeper than the Boom 2 as seen in the linked video of sound samples. Try this EQ from Oluv for the flattest response although adjust the lowest slider to your bass boost preference. Firmware 2.0.0 is a big improvement in neutrality.
- Negatives: Quite heavy for the size. Some bass boost way down low. Treble and mids have some peaks.

Harmon Kardon
Harmon Kardon has one standout speaker that’s always near the top of the size charts.
This boombox size battery powered speaker blends well into home decor and has extremely great bass extension and is pretty neutral, the Harman Kardon Go + Play 3 [Amazon] [Ebay Refurbished]: $385
- Positives: Warm sound with boosted bass. Deepest bass out of any speaker in this size. Sound is more natural than the Go + Play2.
- Negatives: Just a little over half as loud as the higher rated boomboxes. Only 8 hours of battery at medium volume. No water rating.
- Setup: Use the hidden EQ modes to adjust the bass up when outside and down when inside. To adjust bass, quickly press the bluetooth and volume down buttons together, the number of light flashes tell you what mode you’re in. Bose
Bose speakers are generally tuned to have boosted upper bass which can mask the midrange and a warm tuning overall with a rolled off treble. Some people do prefer the Bose sound. Their best speakers are below.
This medium size battery powered speaker has a warm tuning, the Bose Soundlink Flex 2nd gen [Amazon]: $150
- Positives: Pretty much identical sounding to the 1st gen
- Negatives: Not stereo. Warm sounding with overly boosted bass which drowns out midrange detail. Self drains the battery about 10% a week.

Sonos
Sonos speakers tend to be pretty high priced, but are the only option if you want to piece together a wireless home theater system or want speakers connected directly to Wifi. Here’s their best
This large size battery powered speaker has a warm tuning with wifi, the Sonos Move 2 [Amazon]: $500
- Positives: Warm sounding with somewhat rolled off treble. Slightly better midrange clarity than the Move 1.
- Negatives: Not very loud. This may have some of the same issues at full volume that the Move 1 had too, but I’ll need more sound samples at full volume to verify.

Ultimate Ears
Ultimate Ears had some good speakers back when they first started in 2013, but has been greatly outclassed by the competition while they failed to innovate. There’s nothing from them I recommend and their speakers range from mediocre to not good.
